When it comes to PTE Listening, we all know that Summarise Spoken Text and Write From Dictation are important. However, we still need to know how to approach Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer, Fill in the Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Multiple Choice, Single Answer, Select Missing Word and Highlight Incorrect Words in order to get points from these tasks.
- Multiple Choice, Multiple Answer
In this task, you need to answer a multiple-choice question by selecting more than one response after listening to an audio, and the prompt length is 40 to 90 seconds.
When we do this task, we need to select options based on meaning, instead of matching the words we hear. Also, negative marking applies to this test item, so it’s better to choose the options you’re certain about. - Fill in the Blanks
In this task, a transcript of a recording appears on screen with several gaps, and you need to type the missing word in each gap after listening to the recording. The prompt length is 30 to 60 seconds. Before the recording starts, you have 7 seconds to quickly look at the transcript so you know what to expect.
Remember, this task gives you listening and writing points, so try to do your best. Negative marking doesn’t apply to this item type, so don’t leave any gap unanswered. - Highlight Correct Summary
In this task, you need to select the paragraph that best summarises the recording after listening to a recording. The prompt length is 30 to 90 seconds. There are several possible response options but only one is correct.
It’s recommended that you take notes because it can help you note down more details. The best summary would be the one that pretty much covers everything.
Remember, this task also gives you reading points, so try to do your best. - Multiple Choice, Single Answer
In this task, you need to answer a multiple-choice question by selecting one response after listening to an audio. The prompt length is 30 to 60 seconds. There are several possible response options but only one is correct.
You have 5 seconds before the recording begins. During this period, quickly read the question and answer options to make sure you understand the topic. - Select Missing Word
In this task, you need to select the missing word that completes the recording from a list of options after listening to a recording. The prompt length is 20 to 70 seconds. There are several possible response options but only one is correct.
Pay attention to the second half of the recording because it can help you choose the correct answer. - Highlight Incorrect Words
In this task, the transcript of a recording appears on screen. You need to identify the words in the transcript that differ from what is said while listening to the recording. The prompt length is 15 to 50 seconds.
You have 10 seconds before the recording begins. During this period, you can skim the transcription to have a general idea.
Remember, this task also gives you reading points, so try to do your best.
A good reminder: Time management in PTE Listening is important. Don’t get stuck on the question for too long, otherwise you may not have enough time to complete Write From Dictation at the end.
