PTE Academic respond to a situation scenarios are set within university, research, professional, or formal community contexts. Often these individuals will be professors, staff at the academic institution, formal workplace supervisors, or contacts within the workplace.

Common PTE Academic respond to a situation scenario types:
Situation scenarios are presented in a variety of typical workplace, community and social contexts in PTE Core. Register is semi-formal to informal based on the scenario, realistic and to the point.
Common PTE Core respond to a situation scenario types:
PTE Academic respond to a situation sample: “You are a postgraduate student working under a supervisor who asks you to submit the draft methodology chapter in your research paper within this upcoming week. You have finished the chapter as well, but require an additional 2 days to rewrite the data analysis section. Leave a voicemail message for your supervisor detailing the above situation and its resulting impact and propose a new deadline for the submission.”
Register required: Formal. Working with an academic supervisor on a research product.
PTE Core respond to a situation sample: “You work in an office. Your manager asks you to prepare a report for tomorrow’s meeting, but you can’t find some numbers in your colleague’s on leave record. You leave a message for your manager explaining the problem.”

I hope that’ll give me enough time to look things over and see what is missing from it before we meet on Friday. Just email them through my university email. Failure to use the appropriate register. This is going to be the most impactful error in PTE response to a situation (in both Academic & Core). Neither in formal academic language with a professor nor in casual language with a friend does not raise your Appropriacy score. Decide whether this is a scenario for formal or informal response and stick with that decision for the first 5 seconds of reading the scenario.Make the decision of formal or informal response, and stick with it as you begin to read the scenario within the first 5 seconds.
Failure to answer the question asked by the instructions at the end of the story. Make sure that each PTE Academic respond to a situation and the PTE core scenario has a definite statement at the end: ‘Leave a voicemail’, ‘Send a text message’, ‘Speak to your colleague’. Answer that directions specifically. General response: Does not follow instruction scores on content review are lower.
Making use of central memory sentences. Starting August 2025, quality of content is scored by both AI and human reviewers and human reviewers will also specifically flag scripted openings and endings. Uses the frames as a planning tool. The content, including specific words and details, should address the scenario provided and not copy word for word the written topics.
Stopping before 40 seconds. About 20 seconds is too short for the AI to score how well you can finish a response. Finish core response then include a closing line, polite manner or brief next step if finished. Don’t stop talking in a prophetic way anytime there is still a lot of time left.
Failure to request that the person be addressed at the beginning. Start the answer with the name/title of the person you are answering. If you do not introduce yourself, the response will be unnatural and will negatively affect your fluency and appropriacy scores.
Daily 10-minute routine:
Minutes 1-2: Read it once. In the 10 or 20 second preparation time (based on version), make 3 decisions: Academic or Core, Formal or Informal, and the specific action instruction (voicemail, text, in-person, etc.).
Minutes 2-3: Write the complete 40 second response, uninterrupted.
Minutes 3-5: Go back and identify three elements: register (did the speaker’s register remain consistent throughout, or did they change as time went on), specific instruction (did the speaker follow the instruction, if so, did they stick to it or did their register change as they toed the line), and response (did the speaker only include filler between phrases, or was the response at least 35 seconds long without filler).
At minute 5-10: Re-record the same scenario, but this time with what you’ve noticed. Compare both recordings.
Weekly rotation:
No. Both versions measure Oral Fluency, Pronunciacy and Appropriacy at the general level. The detailed scoring guidelines vary slightly between PTE Core and PTE Academic and see the task pages on Pearson’s website (PTE Core Speaking and Writing and PTE Academic Speaking and Writing) for the exact rubric. Content quality is also reviewed for both versions by human reviewers in August 2025.
For both PTE Academic respond to a situation & PTE Core, the framework (opening, body, polite closing) will be the same. The register, vocabulary and tone must, however, change to suit the particular situation. If a friend uses a Core social scenario, but the template used is not formal, then an Appropriacy error will occur. The structure remains constant. The language adapts.
PTE Academic respond to a situation scenarios more complex institutional relationships and more formal register expectations are simpler than the situations in Core. But it’s hard for some to be difficult.
Academic scenarios may be more easy for test-takers who are at ease in standard academic settings. Indications suggest that individuals who have better everyday conversational English skills tend to do better on Core scenarios. How it is notated does not matter, so have to be prepared for both types of notation.
